Back up saves and rehearse recovery

Decide what gets backed up and how to restore it before an AI agent edits your game.

Source-based guidance. No ModLab in-game reproduction has been completed for this guide.

Find the real save location

Games may store saves outside the installation folder. Check the game’s documentation and the toolkit’s reconnaissance output. Close the game before copying files.

Record whether cloud sync is enabled. Check the platform’s recovery guidance before restoring older files into a synced directory.

Inspect the backup command

The um toolkit includes backup, diff and restore capabilities. Read your installed version’s help to understand its exact arguments before using them.

um backup --help

Rehearse on disposable files

Make a disposable test directory, take a backup, alter a test file and verify restoration there first. Keep the original save copy outside the agent’s working directory.

A recovery rehearsal on test files is not an in-game test. Record those two results separately.
