Age of Empires II: understand a civilization mod
Understand the data and sprite work behind the upstream civilization example.
What the source demonstrates
The upstream San Franciscans example adds a civilization to Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. It includes units rendered from 3D and a sprite-format writer.
This is a source overview. We have not reproduced it against a current game build, so this page does not certify compatibility.
Separate data and art
A unit needs game data as well as visual frames. Write down the intended statistics and behavior separately from the asset-generation request.
The game camera, viewing directions, team colours and frame conventions matter. A generated 3D model by itself is not a working unit.
Keep the first change smaller
Start by changing one controlled data value in an offline test. Preserve the original data, document the conversion and verify the result in the running game.
A full civilization has much greater testing scope than a single unit. Use the brief builder to list the exact parts you want and the parts you want to leave unchanged.
